The illustrations inside Josh Lee's
book by Ruth Munro Augur are especially vivid and
illustrate life in the Armed Forces during World War I
“This Josh Lee was a United States Senator from the
state of Oklahoma during the period just before the
second world war -- Many of the pictures still look salvageable. The explorers were admonished to leave the piles and piles of correspondence alone and not to move anything. One picture is almost definitely a chronicle of FDR's inaugural address. The next series of pictures shows how long it is, some of the central details, and then the back of the mounted picture -- still in fair shape. The rest of our pictures just show
a glimpse of the content. Bobby's place was hit pretty hard by the tornado, and it seemed like everyone was busy somewhere else until James Harrington came by, hunting for tornado victims he could help. "I knew this was the place I was supposed to be helping out with when I saw this little girl standing in the drive way, crying like she'd lost everything." At age 68 James has been helping out disaster victims and such for about 20 years now. He was part of the force that went to help the Katrina victims. In just the past 12 months he has helped with the aftermath of 3 major Arkansas tornadoes. He was appointed as the disaster relief coordinator for the North Little Rock Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Always a man on the go, over the past 7 or 8 months his fountain of energy has kind of dribbled away and his wife insisted that he see a doctor. Sometimes you just gotta do things like that to keep the little woman happy so James went in and it quickly became apparent that he had cancer. 68 years old? Cancer? Surgery? Limited Life Style? James is an author and he began researching his options. "It turns out there is a new way of treating some forms of cancer, and it turns out a hospital specializing in cancer treatments was now in operation in Oklahoma City." It also turns out that James has a close friend living in Noble Oklahoma -- easy driving distance from the Integris and ProCure hospital. Connections were made and everything clicked into place so that James could begin taking proton beam therapy in the brand new slant-beam proton cancer therapy room. The cancer treatments would continue for about 2 months -- with a treatment every day. The beauty of this was that the treatments only took a few minutes and the rest of the day belonged to James to do with as he wished. By the third treatment James was already feeling better. Before the week was out he was ready for action. He began finding people to help in his spare time. Then the tornado came through the Norman, Moore, Noble area and the opportunities to help someone literally exploded. When James began helping Bobby Bishop he was soon repairing floors, doors, windows and finally roofs. The two men became friends immediately, and Bobby mentioned the picture of General MacArthur first. Then the other items came into the conversation. |

| That was when James thought it would be nice to ask me,
Lin Stone to look over the
remnants. It only took about two looks before I realized
what we might have there. "These records
are important, a piece of history. Don't touch another thing,
don't open anything else." Some of the documents looked old and brittle. What I wanted was someone that knew how to handle old documents without losing them. I contacted Leroy Bridges, the Director of Outreach Political Communication Center, Department of Communication, at the University of Oklahoma and asked if that department would be interested in evaluating the find. "I'll be there in 15 minutes," he responded. Mr. Bridges arrived on the spot with several minutes to spare. He was able to identify many of the subjects in the pictures and established dates for different events. He explored a bit farther than we had, but just barely enough to convince himself this was a genuine find. |

| There is just nothing in the world like
having someone beside you that knows exactly what he's
looking at! "This is from the Vice President, This is from Will Rogers -- they were friends, you know?" No, we hadn't known. Fact is, we hadn't even suspected a relationship. Mr. Bridges kept us enthralled for over an hour. Josh Lee used to be a U.S. Senator for Oklahoma, and he'd been a Representative before that. He was a friend of Will Rogers, a friend of aviation, a friend of Roosevelt, a friend of.. Well, Josh Lee never met a man he didn't like either, and that just about sums it up.
Probably the most exciting thing we found was Senator Josh Lee's Certificate of Election. Mr. Bridges had a big smile when we admitted that we had never heard of such a thing until this document was found. Can't you just imagine how thrilled Senator Josh Lee must have been to hold this in his hands the very first time? |

There are times
when writers can make a difference
and save a piece of history.
