The discovery of gold has led to more land rushes than any other treasure on earth.  Gold prospectors and those who supplied them would settle in, build, then rush on to the next boom town, even those who had found gold.  

Now gold has been discovered on the web and the rush is on again.  Just like on the old frontier, people join the rush because they think it is EASY to find the gold, just get in the right place and it jumps out at you.  That was not true then, it is not true now.

Just like on the old frontier, you can rush from one hot product to another hoping to find one that makes you INSTANTLY rich -- and getting broker by the minute.  

It isn't the gold that is making people rich, it is the people making the gold valuable.  You need to think of your place on the web as a farm.  Plow your fields, plant your crops, build your fences, and then learn to market your produce.  Remember to keep a guard in the watchtower if you have something original.

People who care the most can make the biggest bonanzas come alive.  People who give the most will find their gold mines developing rapidly.  Those who can build and organize to bring order out of chaos will find themselves standing head and shoulders above the crowd headed for the bank with their loot.  Those who also have integrity to match their originality will find themselves too busy panning gold to make it to the bank.

The question is occasionally asked:  Is the web SECURE?  Scientists who know assure us that the web is secure because of the interwoven linking format.  Knock out one server and another takes up the load, is the theory.  Unfortunately, facts get in the way.  Any time there is a focal point there is the danger of it being compromised.  Where are the focal points?  One is the CBX units handling the phone traffic.  Knock one out and whole states are instantly off the web.

"Yeah, but there's a backup unit for the CBX."  Yes, and the way they are set up now, one bolt of lightning can fry the main unit and the backup unit in the same nanosecond.  If your web server is in one of those states, your business is out of business for the duration.  If your ISP is in one of those states you won't be able to respond to the business you do get.  I am not doomsdaying; it has happened already and will happen again unless alternate solutions are put in place.

Another spider menacing the security of the web is SPAM.  3,000 spam servings a day are not unheard of in just my office alone.  On top of that, mailing list companies are inventing new email addresses for my dot.com mail box every week.  For example -- One series of spam came to 26 invented email addresses.. a@talewins.com, b@talewins.com, Etc@talewins.com andsoforth@talewins.com Just using the alphabet once gives them 26 fake addresses for me.  Then they can start over again.  AA@ AB@ AC@  AD@ Etc.@  The permutations are limited only to the number of suckers waiting to be hooked.

Anyone with a dot.com/net/org/US/whatever falls prey to this tactic.  Even worse damage is being done because the buyers of these mailing lists are clueless amateurs sending out viruses with every keystroke that can wipe out whole computer systems.  

On top of that the FAKE return addresses are a plague by themselves.  There are even people out there with the audacity to send a letter TO a fake address with your real return address in it so it will be returned to you instead of them.

There IS a solution to the problem.  We can have the mail system KEEP each and every copy of the mail piling up at the SENDERS box until it is picked up voluntarily by the RECEIVER.  This way the only messages whizzing across the web would have the pickup box identified and located before they are ever sent.  Then, to make sure the measure is effective, put the offending computer out of commission along with the sender and proxy mailer in the event of criminal activity.  The system could not then be set up again under a different name.

There are other problems with the web, and I know there are always solutions for every problem.  For the InterNaut Voyager, there are clear skies ahead and diamonds on every side.  Damn the SPAM and spin the modem full speed ahead.
