We are once again under an increased national threat level. We’ve learned from experience that when threat levels increase, airline security procedures tighten, delays are common, and travelers experience increased travel stress. This is a new reality of travel…one that will be with us far into the future. Try these ten tips to reduce the hassles and expedite security clearance efficiently. 

Whether you travel for business or pleasure, frequently or only occasionally, it seems that we basically pack the same things every time. Here are a few tips to help simplify the process so you don't have to stress about it every time. Remember that most of these items can be purchased when you get there, but you don't want to spend your vacation money on things you already have at home, and if you're traveling on business, you may not have time to run to the store for something you need at an 8 am meeting.

There’s more to the new airport security measures than just the delays and inconvenience you have to deal with.  During the confusion and hassle of X-rays and hand checks of luggage, more and more people are misplacing or forgetting electronic gear such as cellular phones and laptop computers.  Airport personnel say that the number of electronic devices found unclaimed in airport terminals is rising.  Reuniting these gadgets with their owners is becoming a difficult and full-time job .  Most of the gear is unmarked, lacking even basic owner information such as an ID tag that would allow airline personnel to contact the owner.

Traveling these days is often a juggling act of luggage, boarding passes, identification cards, passports and a gauntlet of security measures. These identification acrobatics can leave one slightly addled and perhaps more at risk of being targeted by an enterprising pickpocket or purse snatcher. 

 All across the nation parking lots are high crime areas. Especially while traveling, you are vulnerable in these places, so you need to be aware and alert.  Traveling, on business or on vacation, your mind is apt to be concentrating on something else besides the dangers which might be hiding right beside you.

Bob flew to Dallas on a business trip last week, but Bob’s luggage flew to Denver. Somewhere between check-in and takeoff, Bob’s bags made a wrong turn and ended upon on another flight. He didn’t see them again for two days! Though most of the time airlines manage to load the right luggage on the right flight, around one-half of one percent of the more than two billion bags checked each year are lost or delayed.
