Tennessee's
Super Vacation Sites

The state is long and lean.  Battlefields seem to be preserved forever, and mock battles
are held almost every year at most of them.  Every Sunday for a year, I used to travel out
of my way to go through LaGrange where the Queen of the Confederacy was born.
The little town consists almost entirely of fascinating historical buildings.

In Memphis, Germantown and Collierville the prestigious mansions are always beautiful.  The streets and roads wind around and pass off into tiny pockets of wondrous beauty.  Every spring the pear trees burst into bloom with fragrance strong enough to reach into Bolivar County.

Fishing, hunting, mud dogging, and racing horses are the chief outdoor sports in this state.  There are always so many lively questions about Tennessee,  here are some of them fielded for you.

Shiloh National Military Park was established in 1894 to preserve the scene of the first major battle in the Western theater of the Civil War. The two-day battle, April 6 and 7, 1862, involved about 65,000 Union and 44,000 Confederate troops. This battle resulted in nearly 24,000 killed, wounded, and missing. It proved to be a decisive victory for the federal forces when they advanced on and seized control of the Confederate railway system at Corinth, Mississippi.

When night descends, you can wrap the silence around you like a cloak at LeConte Lodge. The only noises disturbing the stillness are the sounds of nature.
At 6,593 feet elevation, Mount LeConte is one of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park's highest peaks.
The only way to reach the facility is by taking hiking trails up and back. There are five trails to the lodge, the shortest and steepest being Alum Cave Trail at 5 1/2 miles, which a hiker in good condition can do in approximately four hours. None of these trails can be considered a stroll and you occasionally encounter ice and snow as late as May or as early as October. The other trails are Rainbow Falls and Trillium Gap, each 6.5 miles, a hike of about five hours; Bullhead at 7.2 miles and about five hours; and Boulevard, 8 miles and about 5 1/2 hours. Parking is available at the start of each trail.
Since the only way in or out is on foot supplies are delivered that way as well.
Horses once did the hauling, but the damage to the trails from their shod feet caused the management to seek alternatives.
The most environmentally compatible creatures for packing purposes are llamas, which have very little impact on the trails with their padded feet and are a delight to all hikers of any age with their humming sounds and gentle features.
Rustic accommodations include the lodge, a dining hail, and a cluster of small cabins equipped with double-bunk beds. Dinner at the dining hall is served at 6 p.m., breakfast at 8 am.
LeConte Lodge can accommodate an average of 45 guests per night, and normally fills up a year in advance. Reservations are required for the lodge and for the 12-man lean-to shelter (with bear-proof chain link fence across the opening) near the lodge.
There is no charge for staying at the shelter, but reservations are required through the Park's backcountry office.
