The Spread Of
STAPH

By Mark Olson

His name was Hoolio, spelled with a “J.”

Julio was a good guy, always smiling. He lived with four other men, but they never lived in the same place for more than a week or so. They were maintenance men, working shut-downs.

Shut-downs is where a big plant shuts all the way down; everyone there goes home, and a shut-down crew moves in. The shut-down crew takes everything apart and peers inside for any signs of wear, any signs of mis-alignment. Anything that even looks suspicious is replaced before the molding is put back on. Shut-down crews are big, some, like the one Julio was on last week, hired over a thousand men. With a crew that big, you can do a little fudging, especially if all five of you look pretty much alike and your crew boss doesn't speak your language.
The thing about being on a shut-down crew is that you get a whole lot of hours thrown at you in a hurry. Overtime is most always DOUBLE pay. When two men are working under the same name, overtime is a whole lot easier to work. For the past two years Julio had sent a lot of money back home to Guatemala. One more year and Julio could retire for life.

Then Julio got sick. It wasn't bad sick, but he stayed in the apartment and did the cooking for the other four men while they took his place in the shut-down so the good money kept coming in. He began feeling better and went in to work in his own place. But before the first four hours were up his right arm was going numb on him.

The crew boss told him to go see a doctor, but Julio didn't do that. He grinned and went on working. By the end of the shift he was only working left handed. Another crew boss insisted that Julio go to the emergency room. Julio went home instead. It was his turn to cook again

Another one of his friends took his place the next day and was instructed to say that his arm was much better now. When it was Julio's turn to work again his right arm was almost completely numb. He couldn't use it at all. That time the crew boss took him to the emergency room and stayed with him until Julio was taken into the hospital for treatment.
“It was the bite of a brown recluse,” they were told. “Send this man home. We have taken a big chunk out of his arm where the spider bit him and he needs time to rest.”

Julio talked his way out of being sent home. He stayed and made sandwiches for a thousand men. Everyone really appreciated Julio. You couldn't keep a man like that down. The next time Julio came to work his arm was almost completely black. His fingers were swollen too. The crew chief rushed him to the emergency room.

“Didn't you get our letter?” the doctors demanded. Julio shook his head. It had arrived, but none of the men could read English.

The doctors turned on the crew chief. “This man has an extremely virulent staph infection. You KEEP him out of the work area. There's no telling how many people he can affect just by being close to them.”

The crew chief almost fainted, remembering how many sandwiches Julio had prepared for the other shut-down crew members. It took a mountain of courage, but he immediately called the home office and reported all that he knew about.

Staph, that's a nickname for a Staphylococcal infection. This common form of Staph can cause many kinds of skin infections, like pimples, boils, and rashes. These infections often contain pus, and may feel itchy or warm. They may be swollen or red. Occasionally, staph will cause more serious infections such as surgical wound infections, bloodstream infections, and pneumonia. The common form of staph CAN be treated successfully with the usual anti-biotics.

MRSA is a rare kind of staph. MRSA is different from other staph because it IS resistant to treatment with some antibiotics. There are other forms of Staph even more virulent. Doctors all across the United States are becoming very worried about the ever-growing prevalence of super bugs like Julio has. These “super bugs” are said to be strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Flesh-eating bacteria cases, fatal pneumonia and life-threatening heart infections suddenly are popping up around the country, striking healthy people and stunning their doctors. They cannot be treated by any of the entire penicillin family or any of the other first-line drugs in the treatment arsenal. To let anyone infected with Staph go on working is insane, but guys like Julio – they want to go on working, under one name or another..

Julio's employer hasn't made his case publicly known yet. They want to keep the lid on for as long as they can. If things go the way the employer hopes, you never will hear about it. Meanwhile, Julio is now working at a big restaurant downtown. Don't worry; it's only temporary until the Shut-Down company let's him go back to work.

He's doing pretty good, considering he can still only use that one arm. He's got a big grin on his face most of the time and everyone calls him HoSay. It's spelled with a “J.”

Don't make the mistake of thinking this story is fiction. It happened, just last week. The way staph is spreading in our country it may have happened many times before that.

The best way to prevent the spreading of staph is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. It's a simple procedure. Strange that some people don't want to do it.
“Lave Los Manos” is the way to say it with a “J”. It may not be good grammar, but it gets the message across.

Comments made by Lin Stone:

Another area demanding a penetrating study are those employers using illegal aliens to process the very food we eat -- and that given to our pets. As one leather manufacturer said: his undocumented workers "may stay one day, two days, a week.  Maybe you hire them and they don't show up."  That may be all well and good for saddle makers whose saddles are going overseas, but in the processing of food being consumed right here in the United States by our citizens it matters a great deal who shows up for work.

The original hire may have been healthy enough, but what about interchangeable clones II, III and IIII that show up with fake ID to take his place?

Let Congress issue a grant for a proper study of those blossoming instances of food poisoning and trace back to see how many of those employers involved had illegal aliens working there at any time prior to the outbreak.

By subsidizing employers willing to take risks with our health and our well-being we are not only taking money away from American citizens -- we are also endangering the public.  Here's ONE recent headline.. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is now investigating at least fifteen E. coli cases in the Longville, Minnesota area.

Just in case you don't know... E. coli O157:H7 can cause severe dehydration and intestinal hemorrhaging (evidenced by bloody diarrhea).  The pathogen can also lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), the leading cause of kidney failure in children in the United States.
In another recent headline 60 million containers of wet pet food were recalled after reports of kidney failure and deaths - at a cost of $26 million to $34 million.

You don't believe this has anything to do with illegal aliens?  Just one national meat packing company (producing food for human consumption) recently had thirteen hundred illegal workers arrested in one day.  That was such a big slice out of its workforce that the company had to shut down until they could put American workers to work in place of the illegal aliens.  That proves, incidentally, that American workers WERE available and that the company knew it!)

Staff at the company were aghast at the raid:  "We're trying to criminalize the real victims here, who are just trying to find a better life," was one bitter remark.  Let's reword that for this poor befuddled spokesman.. "These people are just trying to STEAL a better life.  They are taking jobs away from American workers and they are doing it any way they can do it -- with stolen card numbers, stolen identities, and blind eyes when it comes to public safety."

QSI is a contractor that cleans a Cargill meat-processing plant. Authorities charged Gerardo Dominguez, the plant manager, and Maria del Pilar Marroquin de Ramirez, the company's personnel administrator along with 25 other QSI employees with aggravated identity theft. Half of their employees were using stolen identities in working there.

In the United States, just E. coli O157:H7 alone is responsible for about 61 deaths each year, most of them associated with ground beef. The number of people who only got so sick they wished they were dead has never been ascertained. E. coli O157:H7 lives in the intestines of even healthy cattle and is present in their manure. If the workers are untrained or uncaring when these cattle go to slaughter a slight nick in one of the intestines can lead to a contamination of our meat with the cattle manure containing E. coli O157:H7.

Even a small amount can contaminate hundreds of pounds of ground beef as it becomes thoroughly mixed within the meat during grinding. The dangers of E. coli are well known in the food industry, but if the slaughterhouses are hiring people who don't care, or can't speak English sufficiently well to follow directions then all of their customers are at risk.

Any time our food is prepared there are many other hazards than E. coli O157:H7 encountered.
Furthermore, because of the decent wages they are not getting, the living conditions of illegal aliens do not enhance good health; they very definitely should not be allowed to prepare our food.

Should healthcare be completely privatized - or should a segment of it be left in public hands? As the debate infects countries adhering to the "social model of capitalism" (e.g., Scandinavia and France) and spreads to countries in transition in Central and Eastern Europe -it is worthwhile to study the experience of the bellwether in privatized health care: the USA.
