"I just wanted to say that, as an Elementary school
teacher, I have been using your page with information on
lightning and weather safety for my Science classes.
It's been helpful...thanks for making it! I
thought I'd pass along another page I've been using with
my students that you might want to include:

"There's lots of easy to read resources on there for
lightning and weather safety. My kids seemed to like
it. Perhaps you and your visitors will find (this one)
useful as well? Hope I could help!" Ms. Sarah
Hanson ** Electrical surges don't affect
everyone the same way. There are living legends
that have taken two live wires on highline poles and put
them back together again with their bare hands. It is
said that 220 is safer than 110 because a 220 surge is
so strong it will knock you loose while the 110 will
hold you, glued into place. One friend of mine is
a professional electrician known as the best in the
state. He has grown careless enough to leave me
cringing just to watch him working with live fuse boxes
and such. Last year he grabbed a live 220 volt
lead and it knocked him off the ladder. The surge
went in his right arm, and bruised the wall of his
abdomen all the way across. His heart is still
ticking, but his wife has switched to gas in her
kitchen. ** Lightning is not always
deadly
but don't ever count on it!
Another one of my friends was struck by lightning and
left to lie in his wheat field for several hours before
being discovered by his fiancée. It took months of
specialized rehabilitation team ministrations for him to
learn how to walk again, how to think again. His
doctors joked with him how lucky he was, "-- but stay
out of that wheat field. If you ever get hit
again, medical science will not be able to put you back
together."
2 years later he was almost recovered enough to get
married, but still on crutches and clumsy. He was just
locking the gate behind him upon entering that same
wheat field when a bolt of lightning struck him again.
This time, his fiancée was with him. Somehow she
managed to get him back into the pickup and drove him to
the same hospital. There medical science put him
back together again, better than ever, except for losing
his fiancée; after waiting 2 years the first time, she
now suspected it might be safer if she were closer to
someone else for the rest of her life. BTW, my
friend doesn't need crutches now, and he was easily
persuaded to sell the wheat field. Lightning is
not always deadly, but sometimes you have to wonder.
