You Can Meet New Friends At
Robbers Cave

This is the entrance of the cave, which extends some 40 feet back into the mountain -- and has a hidden exit.  Treasures and loot for the taking was not far away.  The old Butterfield Stage Line ran through this area on its winding way to California.  There was also a major road to Texas not far away.  During the Civil War deserters from both sides of the conflict used this area for a rest stop.  One can imagine the furious epithets hurled at national leaders for embroiling the country in such a murderous conflict.

Ever since King David was an outlaw little bands of roving marauders have been associated with stolen treasure.  Needless to say, this area has been tromped over by thousands of treasure hunters.

parents and group leaders should plan to stay close to their small children at all times. Not only are there many natural dangers here, occasionally convict labor is used to continue building new attractions in the State Park.

It's much easier to strike up a conversation with people who are enjoying themselves.  Kyle just walked up and said, "Hey, you ever been here before?"  Before he could shake a stick her daddy was on the way over to put a stop to the budding romance.  I told him not to wear that shirt!

Just as a romantic aside, the "father" shown here had been invited along on a family trip by the mother of the children.  She felt there is no better way to show off how well behaved your children are than to invite a prospective husband on a trip like this.  Conversely you get to see how well behaved this future husband might be by inviting him on a trip like this.  How will he react when the two children dash off in four different directions?  How will he react when they squabble over who gets to hold mommy's hand?  What will he do when a child needs to be carried, or a knee gets scraped?  Does his face betray a growing frustration as the day wears on, or deepening pleasure at getting to be a "father" for a day?

In this particular case I watched the "family" come closer together and appreciate each other more as they scrambled over the rocks together.
