The Best Places
to Visit -- or
Vacation
in Oklahoma

You know what I like to do in Oklahoma?  I like to visit everything that counts big in the memory department -- well, like little Cedar Lake.  As I drove in that first memorable, wonderful time I had the crushing urge to stop, build my home and STAY THERE!  Many moons later I feel drawn back to the area just as once I longed for home.  Tiny little Cedar Lake has a profound effect on many visitors.  Some of the people I talked to there had driven 400 miles to get back, and like me, they had passed larger lakes along the way.

There are hundreds of places in Oklahoma with that same magnetic influence.  Guthrie, in the town of Guthrie I could spend a month there just taking pictures, and the same way with Shawnee, Norman and Noble.  Then there's that long, long stretch through No Man's Land.  The Glinting Tour, in the next box, is also a prized memory.

Oklahoma has really been good to us when it comes to dishing out prized memories.  We just happened to be at Turner Falls when family rain gauges were overflowing and more rain falling like the weatherman was pouring it out of a fifty gallon drum. The next day the falls were gushing with beauty.  But you know what I loved most there?  Walking on the rain-drenched earth, watching the birds, looking at flowers -- and yeah, even dodging some bees.

There are hundreds of places to see, visit or vacation in Oklahoma   I want to tell you about Cedar Lake, Robbers Cave, Guthrie, Cordell -- and a bunch of others.  The places I haven't been to personally I have tried to post links to the sites of kindred spirits who did, like John McCornack and Snowhawk, but definitely to the state's great web sites and, well, what I really mean to say is:  Check this page, and the next one, out very thoroughly.  Be sure to bookmark this page so you can come back any time you get lonesome.  Thank you.

One of the most interesting web sites, and web site builders, in the state. One of the very best sites I've run into for exploring the state belongs to Snowhawk up in Green Country, Tulsa.  The site is beautiful, inclusive, inviting, and professionally created.

Robbers Cave, famous hideout of Jesse James & gang.

The museums of Oklahoma.  An interactive map shows WHERE the museums are so you can plan visits to them in your tour of the state.

Find 300 million years of Oklahoma's natural history in the nation's largest university-based natural history.

An Award WinnerIn a hollow on Poteau Mountain near Heavener, Oklahoma, there is a state park that holds a mystery. A mystery that many have tried to explain. A mystery etched in the face of a large slab of stone which stands 12 feet tall, 10 feet wide, and 16 inches thick. For years, locals called it "Indian Rock."

For places to see and news of the Oklahoma Nations, check out the Indian Times newspaper.  There are many great articles here of interest to Euro-Americans and Americans alike.

Since the dawn of Time, men have come together for fellowship and study. We have built Temples as centers for thought and action. There is in manhood a deep sense of something beyond ourselves, something which we are called upon by our very nature to worship.  The great Temple of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Guthrie is a place in which the glory of the Grand Architect of the Universe is celebrated. It is a place of education, of recreation, of fellowship, of charity and compassion. It is a place of study and philosophy, a place of healing. It is a place which embraces the brotherhood of men and attracts us to the celebration of life.

An award Winner The Oklahoma Backcountry web page has a decided charm all its own.  The photos are sharp and clear, the words are like poetry.  This is a must see site.

Grove Oklahoma, the site is stuffed full of information on this Green Country area.

Be sure to visit the WildCare site where injured wild animals are taken care of by Rondi Large.

Mountain Fork River near Smithville, is southeastern Oklahoma's newest getaway. Cabins await your next retreat to the scenic Kiamichi Mountains. The Fall months find the hardwoods boast of gold, red, and violet during Autumn, with the Pine and Holly providing a year-round splash of green. The Talimena Scenic Drive, a mountain top drive extending from Talihina, Oklahoma, to Mena, Arkansas, lies only a half-hour drive across the majestic Kiamichi Mountains to the north, and is a must-see during October through early November.  More scenery abounds to the south at Broken Bow Lake, in and around Beavers Bend State Park, forty minutes away.

Signs along the road:  1984 F-250 Ford Diesel 3/4 ton pickup for sale.   Needs 2 batteries, 4 tires, one diesel tank and a tool box.

1958 or 1960 Jeep for sale.  Runs rough.  Has no title, no spare.  Must be moved immediately.  Heavy Discount for cash.

I get a real kick out of reading classifieds in the Oklahoma Newspapers.  Like the one that says:  Unregistered Pit Bull For Sale to Highest bidder:    He Likes to run --- runs from rabbits, rustling weeds and dark shadows.  Has nervous tic in right eye when about to bite.  Has epilepsy.  Free leash and free delivery.  May need glasses. Must see to appreciate.  Call 872 5556 after 5:00 for more information.

Then there's the ad saying: Corn on the cob for $8.00 a bushel if you pick it.  If I have to get out there, it's $10.00 per bushel.

Gene Autry Oklahoma has much to offer the cowboy world.

"At a time when Native Americans were torn from their homes and heritage, Wheelock Academy gave the Choctaw the opportunity to acquire essential skills for succeeding in the contemporary United States," said National Trust President Richard Moe. "It set the precedent for all tribal schools to follow and remains not only an integral piece of Indian history, but America's as well.

The Museum of the Red River in Idabel, Oklahoma invites you to become acquainted with its activities and resources.  "For those who may find it difficult to visit us in person, we have designed this website to provide a virtual tour of the museum and its services."
