The Noble Free Press reported that five sealed bids for ice storm debris removal were received by City Manager Bob Wade. Just to put this in its proper context: the top bid was for over $164,000.00 The lowest bid This $1.00 bid came from a company highly experienced in all phases
of debris management projects operating out of Talahassee, Florida.
Subtract $1.00 from $164,000.00 and you can begin to appreciate the
full size of this gift to the Noble community. The Crowder Disaster
Recovery Staff is trained in all FEMA, state, and local regulations

Anyone wishing to express gratitude for this gift may

Most Rose Rocks are turned into local works of art which are almost priceless. Several artisans hand-fashion complete bushes by gluing the stones onto various materials so they resemble red blooms of eternal stone. City Hall has one sculpted rose bush over three feet tall which looks fantastic. Also known as Cherokee Rose Rocks they are mostly found east of town. We uncovered four of them in our front yard while putting in our rose bushes. I offered two small rose rocks on an Ebay web auction and the pair went for $7 -- plus shipping. The ecstatic buyer thought he was getting a real bargain
I know it was worth the trip. All the merchants do a sidewalk sale with some really nice specials. All kinds of goodies show up as ingenious oldtimers show off their talents. And, food, like it was going out of style! Of a Saturday night on Main Street during the summer months you'll often find live bands playing along the street. There are two city-wide yard sales each year. Highway 77 runs through town with most of the businesses found on it. The one stoplight is on Etowah. Handcrafted wood sculptures adorn the main street, murals decorate the sides of many buildings. Streets are clean, and wide. Store windows are polished. Flowers, pots and other merchandise are often left outside at night and still there the next morning. The police force is courteous and friendly, helpful almost beyond measure. Speeders who need to repent will sometimes see a wagging finger instead of flashing blue lights. Noble Neighbors The evening we moved in, neighbors from all four sides came over to introduce themselves and offer help if we needed it. Ann brought cupcakes over to sustain our energy. Melissa showed us how to turn on the air conditioning. During my recent stroke neighbors ran errands, fixed leaks, delivered messages and -- most importantly -- offered prayers. People smile and wave when they pass us by on our street. In the good old summer time whole families go biking of a night. Children actually play outside instead of watching television all day. Someday soon there will be a splash pad here. The brand new library is usually full of readers, and frequently hosts community projects for (or with) volunteers. |

The Walking Trail At The Park
Is Loved By Dogs Too!
| Riley Park is on the very edge of town on Highway 77 and almost
in Norman. It has almost half a mile of paved hiking trail in
excellent shape. The trees along the hiking trail are mostly
evergreen. City Fathers have forbidden bicycling,
skateboarding, motorbikes and rollerblading activities on the hiking
trails. A dozen seats are strewn along
the pathway for those who grow faint. The far side of the trail butts up against the current Santa Fe Railroad bed. This particular segment of the Santa Fe Railroad begins in Arkansas City, Kansas and goes through Noble, on to Purcell and from thence on to Fort Worth. Noble became a town here on 22 April 1889 during the famous land run that founded Oklahoma City, Edmund, Norman and Guthrie. To accommodate wagon traffic a bridge was built so the train could pass over.
The bridge is still there, but back in 1947 the railroad was moved over to take out some of the curves. As you can see the old time workmanship was second to none. By walking through the tunnel (and leaving the park behind) you discover a huge open area to do some rugged cross country walking. I generally go down the power line and come back beside the rail road track. Inside the park boundaries there are fifteen barbecue sites, thirty five picnic tables, one place to pitch a tent if it isn't raining, and multiple parking spots with ten spots allocated just for the handicapped. |

When the first blooms of spring have sprung, the park is a
marvelous place
to walk briskly or slowly along the delightfully convoluted park paths.
Tall trees block out the sun and sprinkle the ground with splotches of shade.
Children
can run for miles and never leave your sight - if you turn quickly enough.
There's a merry-go-round and swings to keep the children entertained
with their
own efforts.

Click on the Flowers for a close up. I've bought a $24.95 book about
flowers in this area, and still can't find the name for these. Any hints?
For the elderly walkers there are flowers, bushes, shrubs, and
even trees
to look at and study while pretending to stop for a deep breath of air.
Every kind of bird known to Noble likes to frolic
through these patches
and dart so close to people that sometimes they
must be dodged lest a
wing strike a glancing blow.
For the younger at heart there are hundreds of acres nearby
showing
Oklahoma, the way it used to be.

Atlas of Oklahoma Climate by Howard L. Johnson
My dad could pick a hundred pounds of Arizona cotton in an hour.
At three cents a pound he could easily keep his family fed. Then
we heard of a farm near Tonopah offering four cents a pound.
Eight times four is $32 a day, and going wages for farm work was
$4 a day back then. With my first $4 check I bought a doll, an
iron skillet, an apple, a bag of candy and something else, with
change left over.
The nightmares were from camps for workers, the drunken rages,
knife fights, gun battles, the bloody beatings. People today can't
even conceive what the real world was like back then.
