Elk Hunting Paradise

Larry Sibbett was born and raised in Idaho. His favorite hunting story is about the time he and his father went hunting for elk. "Dad was a crack shot. We were on this hill looking over a rise and an elk put its head up. Dad fired immediately and the elk went down. Seconds later the elk put its head back up."

"Well, I'll be," said his father. "I missed." Taking more careful aim he fired again. Again the elk went down. Seconds later the elk's head came up again." In a flash of anger at needing to take three shots just to kill one elk, Larry's father fired again. Again the elk went down. But just seconds later the elk's head popped up again. Taking very deliberate aim Larry's father fired again. That time the elk stayed down.

Muttering all the way Larry's father led the way up over the rise. There they found four dead elk, all in a row.

"All we had was two tags and four dead elk. Even in Idaho there wasn't a game warden alive that would believe a story like that. We hurried back to camp and found two luckless hunters willing to take the credit for two of Dad's greatest head shots."

The Sawtooth are one of four mountain ranges encompassed by the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Established in 1972, the NRA includes more than fifty peaks higher than 10,000 feet, 300 alpine lakes, and four major rivers. Who’s up for some Idaho adventure?
