In looking back I can see a pattern that led me repeatedly into a disastrous situation.
  1. First I begged for credit.  "Oh, if they would just let me have credit!"
    Credit, CREDIT.. I truly believed that credit was the     only solution that could get us what we needed and wanted from life.
  2. Somebody gave me credit!  I grew intoxicated with HAVING credit.  Suddenly I had MONEY to spend..  "Hey, now we can take that vacation!"  Have YOU ever acted that foolishly?
  3. A year went by and I became aware that we had too much debt. Actually, that's normal.. when you have credit you automatically have debt.  There is no 2 ways about it!
  4. The courts settled my hash, took away all my
    credit worthiness and left me bleeding, unable
    to buy even the necessities of life.
  5. Somehow I struggled through, okay, my wife is the one that worked the magic, but, After I worked long enough, I paid my debts down, and I swore we would never buy anything else on credit!
  6. New credit was parceled out to us and somehow, we drifted into Step 2 again. 

For me, and most all the poor people I know, "Credit can kill you faster than rat poison; you can't even smell it coming on." 

It is all too easy to get caught up in the rat race! 

  • You buy this on credit,
  • you buy that because it is on sale,
  • then you need something else
  • and before you know it,
  • you are so deep in debt that
  • everything you do is wrong
  • and doing it drags you deeper and deeper into the pit of despair. 
  • You drift into step 3,
  • then move on to step 4 as if you were deliberately marching down the road to debtor's hell -- in lock step with the devil and all his kin.

At this point, even if you work out a financial sheet, it just reveals that ALL your money is going to the bank -- and the credit card company, and the service station down the road and the utility companies -- not to mention the supermarket. 

That's when you realize there is nothing left for you.
