Business As Usual
in Mena Arkansas

by Lin Stone

Now, I'm sure that every business here in Polk County is honest, faithful, and true, and no aspersions are cast upon anyone not listed here. But the ones who are listed here I have dealt with personally and found them to be professional, courteous, and convenient.

They are listed here in no particular order.  If you need something specific, click your FINDER (control F key) and sail right to it.

One terrific resource in town is Goss Electronics.  Not only does the company have most of the phone accessories and electronic components the family might need, the staff is almost aggressive in assisting you to find exactly what you need.  It is found 410 on the south side of Highway 71 and almost dead center of town.  Staff members keep up with community affairs and don't mind spreading the word about good people in town.  Phone 479 394 2780

Two of the most helpful insurance agents I have found in town are:  George S. Davis, found at 1161 Hwy 71-S with a phone number of 479 394 4521 and Steve Standridge found at 1402 Hwy 71-S with a phone number of 479 394 6131 -- These are both really great guys.

Mena Medical Center was founded in 1950 and since its beginning the community has committed resources toward providing a level of quality health care equal to that of larger communities.  When I was visiting my friend Leonard Rhoades in the hospital for a knee replacement he was well attended, and more than happy with the staff.  He said the beds were as comfortable as he had at home.  The best things I liked were the friendly smiles, helpful directions and well-lit halls.  I had to go to the emergency room for a possible stroke and found even friendlier and more helpful folks.  It was very reassuring to find a better staff here than usually encountered in the Little Rock Megatropolis.

The web is changing a lot of things for Mena.  For example:  ArkaTents  offers  Family Tents .. Trail Tents .. Screen & Sun Shelters .. Tarps .. Lofts .. Sleeping Bags .. Campus Plus  Tent Tips  Buyer Protection .. Gift Registry.  The company is doing so well it is expanding to twice its size.

The Mena Star web site is slow to load, but the service in the brick and mortar building is fast and courteous.  Unlike many little town newspapers The Mena Star actually pays its best contributors.   As a result, the writing is superbly professional.

The Blue Knights of Mena can be found here.

Handcrafted Garden Bridges produces handcrafted Cedar or Redwood garden bridges for Koi ponds, Japanese water gardens and landscaped yards. Rod Bird personally custom designs and builds all his garden bridges using only top quality hand selected Cedar or Redwood. The bridges come with posts and rails or high arched or low arched garden bridges without posts and rails  The handcrafted garden bridges are built strong enough to hold up to 400 lbs — that's strong enough to hold a small tractor if you need to dash across it. Galvanized hardware is used on each garden bridge to prevent rust and Rod is happy to weather treat or stain the bridges if needed for your area.  The pictures on the site are really good, and the site is one of the best designed that I've seen.

A US Motors plant is found here, over by the Rich Mountain Community College.  For the past 50 years, many of the farmers and ranchers I've interviewed, preferred motors from US Motors.

Ouachita Art Glass produces the highest quality hand-crafted etched glass awards.

Real Estate Services

But, maybe I should list the best industry here as RETIREMENT.  Older people who are just driving through will suddenly realize MENA is The RIGHT Place to settle down in retirement.  Real Estate agents are having a field day here with all the mountains to live on and valleys to explore.   Many of the brokers are on the web

www.menarealestate.us  offers 360 Deg. Virtual Tours to let you fully appreciate the Mena homes shown.

Vision Realty has produced a web site about the entire Polk County Region.  There are 4,000 pages now, and running strong.  Much care and devotion was lavished on this site as it was being created.  All the churches and their meeting times are listed.  All the major businesses are listed.  All the graveyards known are listed.  All the banks, government offices -- large or small, and the list goes on and on.  The writing, the descriptions, the photos, are superb.

Because land is such a bargain around here there are people buying up raw land and throwing a mobile home on the land.

This 2005 model was installed by Price Mobile Homes, Inc.

Price's slogan is THE PRICE IS RIGHT!  I can go along with that too, but it was the SERVICE that impressed the dickens out of me.  The crew I observed installed twice as many supports as I've seen other companies put under a house this size. Their tools were top notch and well taken care of.  They worked together as if each one was a hand inside a glove.  There were enough of them to monitor the progress of every portion of the installation as each task was being done.  Smooth as silk, polished as a drill team on the parade ground, they put the house together as if a roll of drums was counting the cadence.  Call (479) 394-4111 for your own demonstration.

Airplane Service

Street and Performance is a world class operation with its own foundry and casting facilities.  Street and Performance has produced custom vehicles for Michael Jackson and other celebrities by the score.  Day after day, 7 days a week, as I drive by here I see beautiful cars being worked on.  The brand new web site will give you an even better view than I get. You can get a tour any day of the week.

The Ultimate Engine from Mena is in a class of its own. In fact, you could call it perfect as it is built step by detailed step, slowly and carefully to the highest degree of excellence possible.

ArkaTents  offers  Family Tents .. Trail Tents .. Screen & Sun Shelters .. Tarps .. Lofts .. Sleeping Bags .. Campus Plus  Tent Tips  Buyer Protection .. Gift Registry.  The company is doing so well it is expanding to twice its size.

Where do you find:  General Construction Construction Management  Pre-engineered Butler Buildings  Renovations  Crane Service from 5 to 50 tons  Structural steel erection  Precast concrete erection?  Mena Steel Buildings.

Double Scent Candles  is found at 1107 Mena St.  The candles are double scented to last longer and do more good.  There are over 60 different scents available in dozens of colors with a wide variety of containers to choose from. More are being added each day.  Custom made candles are the specialty of the house. Owners are Nathan and Courtney Roth.  Nathan is retired military. They also care for Nathan's grandmother who is 94 years young.    Their web site has pleasing colors and terrific pictures.

The Rich Mountain Community College (just across from US Motors) has a spacious layout, and some great teachers.  Old folks like me can take classes for just $5.00  Like I said, this is a great retirement community, even if you have to work for a living.

You probably won't need tires unless you actually move to Mena, but here's my favorite tire dealer anyway, FATMANS SERVICE CENTER.  We checked tire prices all the way to Fort Smith, and FATMANS gave us the lowest bid.  That was good enough.  When we got there the service was good enough to write home about.  Phone 479 394 4030 for 24 hour tire service.  Home phone 479 394 6390.  Located at 918 Highway 71 South.  The only disappointment I had was having to ask WHO was that FATMAN this place got named after.  Wasn't nobody there smaller than I am.

Just about everybody here has need of a chainsaw, if not for themselves, then to help someone else cut wood.  When I decided to become a native I bought my chainsaw from Randall's at 2806 Highway 71 South.  The prices were right, and the selection was awesome.  Some of those bars were EIGHT feet long!  I couldn't even pick up the blade by itself, much less the chainsaw.   479 243 9300 is the phone number to call.

For the Sake of Animals.

I finally caught Jim's Junk open.  This is on Highway 71, heading west and on the right hand side of the street.  Inside is disappointing at first with everything so crowded and the people ahead of me clawing through the bargains before I could decide if they were bargains.  Paperback books were 8 for a dollar.  Many of the hard back books were only a quarter each.

Jim says the only thing ever stolen from the store ("besides my pickup") was a tiny windmill Jim made up himself.

"And I've got more items here than a Super Center Wal Mart.  Of course, most of mine is one-of-a-kind so I don't need as much floor space as they do."

What Can Mena
Haul To The World Table?

The best product we have here is space, room to grow in.  Why pay $10,000 an acre for land where water costs a dollar a gallon and the sun will blister paint off the wall at noon when you can live here in paradise and get land for a thousand dollars an acre?  Move your horse herds here, your registered stock, your dog training facility and anything else that needs room to grow.

***

This area is blessed with forests of hardwood and pine.  Numerous sawmills in this area are producing lumber, but there are only two places actually doing something with the lumber besides shipping it out.

Industry could come in here to produce wood products on the spot and thus eliminate all the shipping.  Wood pellets, wood pallets, wood furniture, wood floors, picture frames, sawdust, A-frames, window frames, cabinets, axe handles, shovel handles, hammer handles, broom handles, walking sticks, wooden toys, wooden wheels, plywood, and a dozen other specialties can be made from wood right from this area.  If you have an industry that uses wood, move it here and take advantage of good labor with loyalty built in.

***

Another thing we have in abundance here is rocks,  River rocks, gray rocks, black rocks and even blue.  Thanks to modern technology these can be whittled up into any size, shape or color.  There's enough rock here to gravel every driveway in the United States, enough rock to rebuild every road in the state of Mississippi.  Tombstone etching could be a thriving industry.  Cement products can be produced right here and shipped to anywhere in the world.

Transport is not a problem.  There's a railroad going right through this area to haul it out or bring it in.  Trucks leave here daily for every state in the Union.  It's not that far to the Arkansas River with its cheap access to the World Wide Ocean.

***

The industries that are thriving here in Mena are using homegrown talents -- like remaking old cars -- anything from a Model A to a Henry J.  It is a real treat to be driving down the road here and see a real Studebaker pickup coming at you, or parked in driveways.  Seems like every farmer has an old car or truck waiting in their garage for rehabilitation.  Many of them are in mint conditions.  Others seem to have let the julep get to them.

If your small business needs a fleet of cheap cars, trucks or vans this is the place to get them from.  You'll find that costs are only about half what you'd pay elsewhere.  Call 479 394 2065 for actual prices if you doubt my word.  If Ronnie doesn't have what you need at the moment he has a dozen friends in the same business and he doesn't mind sharing your order with them.

Then there's people that can rebuild airplanes, old tractors, pumps and pistons.  The skills are here, just ask.

***

There are so many things people can do that don't require them to be inside the company office that is paying them. For instance, Whooie Sticks can be made at home.  With a blast of publicity you are able to sell tens of thousands of them.  By sending one quality control officer here and running one ad for Whooie Stick manufacturers you can be in business.  A stream of applicants come in, pick up plans for producing the product and return with their first efforts.  Your quality control officer buys those that are terrific, and shows the other applicants where improvements are needed before payment can be made.  Within 30 days those that are able to produce Whooie Sticks that sell on the spot will have taught their country cousins how to do almost as well and you'll have a "factory" whizzing along that you don't have to heat or pay rent on.

The same process will work for any other product, be it graphics or goat hair cachets.

ANYTHING can be made here that is made elsewhere.

A concentrated pool of brilliant labor is already here.  Natural resources abound, and transport is in place to bring in anything that might be needed, and to ship out finished goods.  All that is required is some industrial tycoon able to produce markets for the products.

***

Why is it people can't be satisfied with what a land wants to produce?  Give a man a prairie and he's determined to raise trees.  Give a man desert and he wants to raise rice.  Give a man a forest and his first natural inclination is to burn it down to make fields.

Everywhere you look in Polk County there is brush, briars, brambles. Clear it all out and then turn your head for ten minutes and it is back again.  But what have the captains of industry asked the people here to raise commercially?  CHICKENS!

Chickens?  Chickens don't thrive in brush, briars and brambles.  They want a chicken house built, a chicken pen, and they demand chicken feed hauled in just for them.  They want a fan in the summer and they need a heater in the winter.  None of those things slide willingly off of brush, briars and brambles.

But, brush, briars and brambles will raise goats.  There's enough of it here in Polk County to raise millions of goats.  What can you do with goats, you might ask  "Nobody here wants to eat goat meat."

OH!  That's right.  But you know what, we can raise them here and ship them to the Middle East or to Africa, ship them to Mexico.  There are even a few places in China where people will feast on goat meat.  We may not like goat meat, but most of the world is crying for it.

Let's raise goats.  They don't need heaters or fans.  They don't need their feed hauled in from a thousand miles away either.  They thrive on what we have right here in abundance: brush, briars and brambles. Throw in some poison oak and goats think they are being pampered.  Import some kudzu and they will think they are in heaven.

In the Ouachita National Forest here there are signs up that say:  "If you spot a fire, Let It BURN!"  As the Forest Service explains it a fire consumes the underbrush and lets the trees thrive.  Underbrush is another word for brush, briars and brambles.  Isn't that strange?  That's just what goats are good for cleaning up.  The only trouble is that goats don't send acrid smoke, hazardous particulates and terrible fumes boiling into the sky to pollute our atmosphere.  Nor do they leave ashes behind that not even a wild pig will wallow in.  But maybe we can talk the Forest Service into letting us use goats to clean up their underbrush in spite of this handicap.

Another market for goats is the Foreign Aid Program.  Instead of sending our money abroad so that people can buy food Congress can send goats abroad so that people will have the strength to earn money.  Think about it, if you were really starving would you rather have a dollar to burn or a goat to roast?  Send goats and wipe out political kickback.
