Altus, Arkansas is a coal mining section of the state.  This page is a memorial to the miners who kept the town going.

And, now a note from the Mayor of Altus.  Dear Mr. Stone:  Our people are friendly and glad to meet new people, and we look forward to having you come to Altus and eat at one of our THREE wonderful eating places downtown Altus - - Fat Tuesday USA (cajun cuisine), Alligator Rays (wonderful pizza, brews& mixed drinks), and of course Kelts (British Pub with foods and brews of the British Isles). Also, if that is not enough, come early and spend the day touring the local WINERIES, and do some free tasting as well. Once you decide what is your favorite ARKANSAS wine, you can take some home with you! OR BETTER YET, stay at a local Bed & Breakfast or motel and eat here, then visit some more the next day!!! We ALWAYS have something going on in ALTUS, WINE CAPITOL OF ARKANSAS!!! and PROUD of it!!!! We are very pleased to be a part of such a great state. Thank you for visiting our web site, and WE CAN"T WAIT TO SEE YOU IN PERSON HERE IN ALTUS!!!!! Let me know when you are coming, so I can be around to greet you!!! Take care and have a safe trip!!! Mayor Post, ALTUS, ARKANSAS

Visitors to Arkansas may need a choice place to stay... The Arkansas Hospitality Association lists the top Arkansas spots in every locality...

Barling - Official Web Site  The City of Barling Arkansas is located in the north-west corner of the state.  The City is just south-west of I-40 and is accessible by three main arteries: Arkansas Highways 22, 59, and 255.  Barling also borders the scenic Arkansas River.

Batesville - Chamber of Commerce Batesville Arkansas, view from the river. This vibrant area, located in the foothills of the beautiful Ozark Mountains, provides an atmosphere conducive to cooperative growth and development. Batesville is the county seat of Independence County.  Once upon a time I got all my tool handles here, far below wholesale.

Bentonville - Convention & Visitors Bureau

Berryville - Official Web Site

Bigelow AR was the first town in the state to have a concrete foundation for its sawmill. In the early 1900s people would bring their families from miles around to make sure the "quiet" sawmill was really working, and not just sitting there idling. That may be hard for us to imagine, but my parents told me repeatedly how the ground would shake and quiver from the palpitating thrusts of an engine ten and twenty miles away.

Black Oak Arkansas.  The population of Black Oak is approximately 277.

Blytheville - Chamber of Commerce

Booneville - Chamber of Commerce

Brinkley - Mayor Billy Clay is an open, friendly man with a great love for this area.  I was lucky enough to meet him way back when and a better booster for Brinkley you will not find.  The only trouble with Brinkley is if you want lodgings during goose season, you'd better call WAY ahead to make reservations.  I have seen geese (in that region) so thick I couldn't drop a rock anywhere in 80 acres and not hit one.  I've seen ducks surge up thick enough to darken the sky.
The town is on I-40 about half way between the Little Rock Metro and Memphis.  Gene's Barbecue is THE place to stop for pie; the barbecue isn't bad either.  I don't remember their names, but on numerous occasions I did meet most of the staff on the Brinkley school system and many of the students, and this was a terrific team.

Clinton Arkansas is in the heart of the best deer hunting in the state.  This same area has ticks that are so tiny you can't find them with a search light until they fatten up. "Seed ticks are always tiny, but these are more like the size of runty microbes.

About a dozen miles from Clinton I am running around loose on a thousand acres of private land.  In the wee hours of night I have decided the thing for me to do is raise coyotes.  A prime condition hide from a young coyote brings $20 during good times and bad.  From the sound of things, breeding stock surrounds me on all four sides.  If I turn a couple of chubby cackling chickens out to roost here, them cute little coyotes won't even realize they have been  harvested until I stretch them out to their outer limits.

Eudora has a tiny little web site up.  More impressive is the pageful of information on doctors and post offices in this Eudora area.  For example:  "Dr. A. W. Webb came to Chicot County in 1834, but remained only a few years before he moved to Little Rock where he was robbed and murdered in September, 1866."  Eudora Schools, Home of the Badgers.

Hughes Arkansas is at the end of the rainbow, but it has never recovered from the time the Yankees stole the pot of gold. It is on Hiway 38 in St. Francis County with a population of 1919. To get there you have to go through Widener, population 316. There are tall willows, huge spreading cottonwoods, the winter wheat is lush against the scarlet blast of trees. I didn't see one square field anywhere I looked. Attendants at the service station as you enter town were most inhospitable, but the school administrators were exceptionally nice, as were the other city officials I met.

Jacksonport is located in Jackson County just a little south of Newport between Auvergne and Elgin along Highway 17 on the banks of the White River.

Jacksonville Arkansas, near the crowd, but not in it. A spectacular town with almost 30,000 population, great schools, and a good industrial base with room to grow. It is a little hard to know where you are going, until you realize that the streets go in a circle here. Some of the concrete sidewalks I helped to pour in 1978 is still in place. My favorite chunk of Jacksonville is along Loop Road. The Hunan Restaurant on Main is excellent dining. Gwatney Chevrolet has a huge American flag flying just off the freeway at Gregory Street. You can see it clear from the south end of town.

What kind of people live in Mount Ida?  Well, as I was coming down the road at about 60 MPH to where 270 and 27 junction  my left front tire blew to shreds.  I brought the car to a stop right across from the Phillips 66 station by the name of Top Spot.  I looked at what was left of the tire and shuddered with gratitude that I was still alive.  Then I opened the trunk and got the jack out.  By the time I had figured out where the jack went under the car Mike White had crossed the road.   "There's no need of you getting your clothes dirty," he said.  "I'll change it for you, free of charge."   Mike wouldn't even think of taking a tip when he was done.   Mike White and Rafe Seiler own Top Spot, but as of that April day the station was not open yet.  Mike didn't expect any stock in for another day or two.  "But when we are open, we'll have tires, a mechanic on duty, oil, fuel, and good customer service."  I'll personally vouch for the warmth of the customer service.

Life's most important lessons are amazingly varied and can be quite confusing.  Even so, they most all have two things in common. First, they usually are not particularly complicated. It certainly can sometimes take a while to get it; but once you do get it, the lesson is normally straight-up and to the point. Second, and here is the rub, the lessons invariably are a "So now you tell me!" kind of thing.

J. T. Hale describes heritage this way:  "Heritage is where you come from.  Heritage is the kind of example you are today, and heritage is what the next generation picks up to carry on into all the tomorrows.  If America lived up to its heritage its greatness would last forever."

Pine Bluff -- You keep thinking Pine Bluff is a little town,
but the more you drive the more of it you see, and more,
and more. It is all spread out, nice and clean. The people
there are the same way. Pine Bluff sits on The River, and
is a major intermodal shipping point. It is also a center for
many state government agencies. Their little convention
center can host a party of 10,000 -- or make 10 big people
feel right at home. The Pine Bluff flea market brings visitors
and vendors in from all over the state. I picked up hospital
scrubs for $2 each, melons for $1 each, and a bunch of other
goodies.

- Conveniently located in central Arkansas, Russellville is 75 miles
from Little Rock and Fort Smith on Interstate 40. Bring your camera
and plenty of film. Russellville is the "Heart of the River Valley."
Scenic Highway 7 intersects with U.S. Highway 64 in downtown
Russellville and leads you on one of the most breathtaking drives
in the country. The streets of Russellville are well laid out, everything
is easy to find. Best of all is the hospitality of the people you find all
over town. The churches are beautiful, the restaurants are exceptional
even for Arkansas. Be sure to stop anytime you come whizzing
through this area.

Sherwood - On 5/11/2001 The Wall Street Journal declared Sherwood, AR a "Perfect Town" It was named the best hometown in Arkansas in a survey by the University of Central Arkansas. It's also one of the safest cities in the state, with more police officers per capita than any other city. Sherwood offers 17 neighborhood parks, six outdoor lighted tennis courts and three swimming pools. You will also find numerous Soccer, Softball, and Baseball fields, and one of the finest athletic facilities in Arkansas.  Sherwood butts to the north of North Little Rock.  It is just about the cleanest town in the state.

Stephens is isolated. On the road there I drove for miles without seeing another vehicle. The smell of oil still permeates the town. The oil is mostly gone, but Berry Petroleum is making a firm stand at making oil by-products sustain the area's economy. There is also a recycled papers company there. The rest of the residents are involved in making a living in the woods. Little ranches are carved out of the woods and I saw some good-blooded kine grazing in small fields. I also saw one ranch raising burros.
