Birds of Arkansas

By: Lin Stone

Arkansas might be classified as a poor state in terms of economic wealth.  But many farmers here go far out of their way to help build and keep habitat viable for wildlife.  Whole cities, like Stuttgart and Brinkley, throw their weight and their enthusiasm into a drive to preserve wildlife.

Furthermore, the whole state voted for an eighth-of-a-cent sales tax to support conservation here.  And where do you think the Ivory Billed Woodpecker was found?  That's right, Arkansas.  And where at in Arkansas?  In a PROTECTED environment, set aside by citizens of this state.

Arkansas is serious about protecting its birds.

I do not pretend this list is complete.  The birds listed here are the most common ones you MIGHT find in Arkansas.  I've seen hundreds of brown pelicans here plumped down in one spot, but you aren't likely to see brown pelicans here because that was a one day event and they were gone when I came back in less than an hour.  I don't know how they got here and I don't know why they came.

The list is in alphabetical order instead of being arranged by groups.  It is separated first by birds that you just might see at any season of the year, then by the birds you are more likely to see in Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter.  In this way you can have your bird identification book out and be watching for the Arkansas birds you are most likely to see on your trip.

Remember too that birds vary by habitat.  For example:  Ducks will always be found near water.  The more water there is, the more ducks there might be.  Geese prefer to graze AND have water nearby.  They are more likely to be found in open fields, preferably GRAIN fields.  In Arkansas you never really know what kind of habitat you'll see in the next ten miles.  Will it be wetland, open field, plain, hill, mountain, valley, stream, river, pond, lake or meadow.  That's good.  You won't get bored in Arkansas.
