New Technology |

Lin Stone is an author, writer, photographer who fully intends to be on the cutting edge of new technology. His reverse answer worksheet is proving popular with all who see it in action. "I know it will be copied by everyone and I'll never make a nickel out of it, but I do want the credit for applying the principle!" Vain man.
| Back when the man in the moon was just a little boy there were only three people in the world. Daddy was the first man, Mama was the first woman, and I was the only kid on earth. Then modern technology hit us with the arrival of a radio. Just the battery for it weighed 20 pounds; the radio itself was much bigger. All we had to do was put the antenna on top of the house and we snatched shows off both stations in the state. A ground wire ran out the window and attached to a steel rod Daddy drove 4 feet into the ground. After a rain storm the dirt sizzled around the rod, but then we could get 3 stations instead of just 2. Just like the internet is doing today, radio opened up a whole new world. In my mind's eye I can still see dozens of the radio shows I watched as a youngster. There was Bobby Benson from the B-Bar-B Ranch. His favorite horse was the very first one to not be destroyed when it broke a leg; some cutting edge vet saved it. And Sky King had his own air plane to swoop around in while Sergeant Preston of the Yukon just mushed around in something called snow. I was sure that snow was some kind of extra slick grass, probably tundra or something like that. | What is the Insurance? Yes. Low cost too |
| The Shadow had me jealous with his power to cloud men's minds. I still remember Lamon'ts come-uppance when he encountered the new technology known as an electric eye for the first time. I knew right then that his time on radio was strictly limited. There are people today in the same pickle, Technology is a distraction to them, a barrier someone keeps moving in front of them. Instead of an opportunity it becomes a hindrance. They will still be cranking out buggy whips when Sky King is showing Penny how to land lucrative government contracts on Mars. | Looking for work? | The Lone Ranger was the first one to use interactive communication. Before I received an actual picture of him I had imagined he wore a bright checkered shirt and Levi's. When Cheerios revealed he wore a nondescript faded blue shirt and trousers. I discovered why so many people he met on the range failed to realize he was one of the good guys. Using his interactive postcard I sent my sartorial advice to him, free of charge. If he'd just listened to me, he'd never have been under suspicion again. Not everything on radio was great. When Dragnet came on I'd slip outside to slither through the shadows in the sagebrush, searching for rattlesnakes in the dark with one eye shut; I had to give the poor things half a chance, you know. | |
| With an interactive encylopedia I'd have known before I went out that pit vipers can see in the dark better than I could. The web is interactive too, and the children of today will remember the thrill of actually typing into their computers instead of telling it what to do, of the thing called animation that let them see Six Gun Pete shoot off his feet, and thinking it was funny. They will also remember the FORMS they filled out took twice as long as sending an E-Mail, but was expected of the web site, or it wasn't camp. They'll remember that books were still written on paper even though CDs were on the way in, and the web fully capable of delivering immense sums of up-to-the-second data to thousands of computers at the same time, that the web could whisk you from one side of the galaxy to the other with a single click, and you could search the whole web in less than a minute. I see so many web designers insisting their creations are worth a hundred times as much as the ones written in Front Page or some other, simply because they are working manually to add some bells and whistles. Lest we forget, the medium is not the message. And modules can stack up to make a mountain. Send your children to read Ella and Her Sisters and after they have colored the pictures a dozen times, tell me they would like it more if I had written the page with a buggy whip. |
Innovations are swamping our world so fast that at least one site is now running exhibits available from 22nd Century Science. |
The medium is not the message.
