Native American Art is very much a part of the southwestern decor. No home should be without a genuine Navajo blanket, woven in the old way.

Even today, in many areas on the Navajo Reservation there is no running water, electricity, or telephone service. I asked the name of one well and learned it was SITTING BY THE WELL well. Why? Well, because the water flowed only at certain times and people who got there early, sat down to wait for it.

Native American artisans often labor for hours, days, weeks, even months to produce works of art in the old ways. Many of the Navajo artists and artisans have worldwide reputations already, and others deserve one almost as much. Their work is highly prized in European markets. European buyers understand they must wait four months or longer for the art they commission to be finished, just as happens with other highly acclaimed artists.

Please remember that I took these pictures just as snow began to fall, 8,000 feet above sea level, with the weather standing at 10 degrees above zero, with the wind blowing icicle daggers, cats scrambling to get inside the picture, and a few other assorted challenges.

Beatin Yazz: Code talker, Marine, artist, a.k.a. Little No Shirt. Navajo people insist that Walt Disney copied his style for Bambi from Beatin. Beatin's work is of world renown quality. He has become almost totally blind and does no further work. Work from him is very scarce on the market.	Painting of a Navajo mom and young daughter, the daughter is holding a baby in a cradle board. While her mom is busy grinding corn on a metate in the old way. There is a little goat in the background with some sage brush. Sized 11 by 17+ plus a dab. (Beatin is well-known for using odd-sized formats)	$12,000 This painting has been seen by only a very few Euro-Americans and 2 Japanese houseguests. It is definitely a collector's item of the first grade. Your guests will be stunned!
E. Sumatzkuku, a Hopi artist, still young enough to produce many more. His work is sometimes displayed at Babbit's in Tuba City. Hopefully this Hopi artist will produce many more masterpieces.	This is a pen and ink drawing with just a touch of turquoise. The focus is the Corn Maiden holding an olla with a Mudhead Kachina inside. There is a large olla near her feet that contains corn, and a Sunface is at her back. This is an exquisite work, and the very first time this artist has ever added color to a drawing. Size: 14 by 17	Pottery represents the earth from whence it comes. Therefore this is the spiritual roots. The emblem on the oval vase represent the feet. They are surrounded by an abundance of corn with the leaves. The human being comes out of the earth. The life of the spirit curves upward. The spirit in turn is represented by a Yei, or a Kachina. That in turn holds the birth of humankind. Therefore it is a cycle of life representation. $1,700
George Rivera, from the San Juan Pueblo. George was the Governor of his pueblo at one time, if not still. Sorry, I somehow forgot to take the picture of this one.	Unique Painting done in acrylic in bold colors with strong strokes. Subject is of a pueblo deer dancer, and it is definitely impressionistic. The dancer fills the entire surface of the 23 by 31 inch painting. The frame is a Museum Mount 29 by 37 and very colorful.	Deer Dancers must make their own costumes by hand. Antlers are attached to their heads, and a tail dangles behind them. As they wind their way down the hill they prance and swish like real deer. This particular dancer looks almost black and is very distinctive. The highest bid over $1,500 will have the painting, in its frame.
Doc Tate, of Oklahoma, now deceased.	This is a water color done in pale blues and grays. It shows the sun setting over a lake with a moonpath glistening on the water. Two riders on horseback are returning to 3 teepees, all done almost silhouette. The woman rider in back is pulling a travois and carrying a papoose. Pelts are hung out to cure in the distance below. The whole feeling I get is that they are coming home from a hard day of work, and there is much more work to be done after they arrive. Size of painting: 18+ by 31. Frame size is 24 by 36	Values are increasing for Doc's work. This one can be yours for $4,700
Asol Keesh has a gift for hiding things in his pictures. I found 1 item, a rabbit. Marleen found the deer. There are others hidden. Try your luck, click on the picture for a larger version.	Asol has made a frame out of wood found right near his home as a perfect setting for this water color. Size is 24 by 30	Priced at $1,100 I watched as this one was being done. To myself I kept saying, "Stop, Stop. It's perfect already. You're going to ruin it!" Asol kept going, and sure enough, it was perfect.
