If you are serious about getting on the Internet to make money then, your three top priorities are:

Put up your web site

Now let's do that over again, in slow motion..

Step 1: Choose your domain name with care. You want to make sure you find a domain name that means something or at least tells people what they can expect when coming to your web site. Then register it so nobody can steal it from you. Here's a shortcut; Pretend you have rented a billboard on the freeway near you. Traffic is moving at 3X the speed limit past your sign. What word or phrase can you post on that sign that will tell drivers who you are, what you do and how to find you? Here's an example: BARBERSUPPLIES.COM That will do the trick for someone selling barber supplies, won't it? Something along these lines are what you need.

Step 2: Find A Host -- a good host! First of all, you might be wondering, what IS a host? A host is a party kind of like a hotel that rents out rooms for your web files. Our guy with the Barber Supplies business could rent 1 or more rooms from a host and the host's address becomes his address because that's where his files are staying. Hosts typically rent out their rooms by the month and by the year.

To continue our analogy, most hotels provide clean sheets, hot water, cold air, fluffy pillows and a television to watch. Your host might provide a long line of amenities that you might treasure. The web is finally settling down and most hosts today are pretty good and most of them are also fairly inexpensive. Just make sure that the host you do choose provides you with cpanel -- and that the cpanel has either Fantastico or Simple Scripts on it. HostMonster is my own choice. At no extra charge it gives me Unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth and it is online most of the time. It provides me with 3-4 dozen free programs that will click right into place when I need them.

If I call WordPress a blog you might be offended, but if I tell you WordPress is a basic building block that let's me put up a professional looking web site on any subject in a matter of minutes you might be more impressed. In a few minutes here I'll tell you how to find hundreds of free designs to make your web site look like a thousand dollar bill.

Besides WordPress, Cpanel will provide you with the opportunity to launch a forum, a membership site, a picture gallery, and your own advertising business. Cpanel will help you build virtually any kind of web site you might think of.. real estate, Mall, picture pasture and lots more. HostMonster will let you test drive the whole process, and check every facet -- before your buy anything. Oh, I forgot to mention it also provides you with one of those mailing list facilities all the gurus say you can't live without. Boy! I hunted for years before I found one simple enough that even I could understand.

Step 3: Once you have your domain name and your host secured, go back to where you registered your domain name, and point your domain name to your new host. What you want to change there is called the DNS to your host. Both your host and your domain name registrar will be glad to help you.

Every report I've read reveals how easy it is to build a web site using html. "If you can use a word processor you can make a web." Well maybe you can make a 1 page web site if you are a genius and somebody is leaning over your shoulder that knows what the score is. But even then you won't reap the benefits that your would have with a blog.
For instance, with a blog, every time you post a page thousands of people will wonder if they should come visit you. Search engines will be the first ones to get there - and I'm talking Yahoo, Google, etc..

Unfortunately, us WRITERS WILL NEED 10-20 pages just to say "Hello."

A blog will fit them perfectly. Now I'll be the first to admit that blogs and bloggers have a bad name. That doesn't mean all blogs look stupid. The fact is, blogs can be far more beautiful than an html creation and the way they look can be changed in less than 10 seconds. Yes, you can go from blue to emerald green on every page of your blog in less than 10 seconds.

I never have bothered making a beautiful web site. I guess you can tell that by the way this page looks, right? You're a writer too, so that's okay. Anyway, here is a short list of some blogs I have made.. Special Bulletin, Power Living, Noodled, BookBinders.

What is the difference between Noodled and Power Living? One is wearing a green dress and the other one is wearing a blue dress. That truly is the whole, entire shooting match. So, take a close look at them. If I change the banner and the background it looks as if I had put a lot of work into it.

Use any art program you know how to use to make your own banner and background and you are in business. This doesn't just work with my themes, You can use any of the themes available on the web (that you can download for free) and there is even software out there that lets you create your own themes.

All of my blogs were made in less than 30 minutes; I can change the color-com in less than 10 seconds. I'm not going to, but I could, and I have. If you are completely new to the Internet, then it would be a good idea for you to launch a WordPress Blog as well Do you like the way my blogs look? With WordPress you can grow your web site into a unique site as big and beautiful as you care to make it. The biggest reason I suggest setting up a blog is that every time you make a post on your blog, notice goes out to the "news services" that you have made that post.

It's kind of like hiring a town-crier to run before you, spreading the news that something important is coming; with this wonderful difference: you don't have to pay this town-crier. All you have to do is be good, be unique and you will be a moneymaker.

Don't think for a second that blogs are second class citizens. In some very important ways blogs are actually better than a "real" web page. 1. Provide FREE quality content and information on your web site. These will be simple pages; no flash, no splash, just pure information. Here's a sample of one of mine.

2. Siphon people off your primary information page to a squeeze page.

For example, you might say: Click HERE for a free -- Tom Sawyer Book... whatever freebee you have. I prefer to use a banner, or a book cover to hold the link.. Look at this example:

You're going to need something besides a Tom Sawyer book to give away. So. Let me introduce you to a download site with 321 VALUABLE books or software packages that you can give away or sell.
Now, you are probably not going to believe that is all free, or think maybe it is not all that wonderful. Well, I've been successful in this business since 1998 and this is the absolute best free goodies web site I've ever found.
Yes, I have found better ones, but they were not free;
THEY COST ME THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!
They are good enough to sell, but you might give them away if you need a really good piece of bait. I have DSL, and I did not download all of them, and I spent 4 hours just downloading from this FREE package.

3. Update your web site daily. Nothing complicated here either. For example, you could just add a new page, or add some more information to one of the pages you already have. With a blog you'd just add another post.
4. If you decide to put up a blog then take the next easy step and encourage comments from your visitors on your blog -- but be sure to monitor them frequently and remove all the offensive contributions.
5. Drive traffic to your web site. If you had a page listing romantic novels (for example) you could surf the web for forums about romance novels and make intelligent comments on this subject, letting your forum signature tell people how to find your page. -- and
6. Monitor your stats to see what is bringing customers in. The most important stats you can watch are the LATEST VISITORS stats. These tell you the last 300 visitors to your web site, and frequently you'll even see where they came from and what they were looking for when they clicked.
7. Add more content that your visitors want.
