Car Safety Tips

If your car has remote keyless entry and you lock your keys inside the car you can SOMETIMES call your sweetheart with a duplicate key. Hold your cell phone close to the car door then ask the person with the duplicate key to press the unlock button while holding it close their cell phone. Sweet music will greet your ear as your car unlocks. IF this does work, this will work even if you are in Europe and the other cell phone is in South America. Even if you are only blocks apart this will still save the time it normally takes to drive the key to you.

A Question

A school bus is slowing down as it comes towards you on a busy road. A child is waiting on your side of that road. There are no lights flashing and the stop sign is not out. Is the bus driver waiting for you to get on past? What should you do?

In a similar situation the daughter of a friend of mine was struck down in front of him by one car that did not slow down. Then before he could even move, the car behind it ran over his daughter again.

If you've gone to the hospital and taken major doses of antibiotics, watch out for the possible loss of old driving habits. For instance, before I went into the hospital I could glance away from the road for a few seconds and my hands would automatically steer the car for me during those seconds. On the way home from the hospital my hands were NOT automatic anything, not even holding the wheel steady. So, after a hospital stay evaluate what you have become accustomed to your hands doing for you until you are sure your habits have remained with you.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that one out of every five fatal crashes in the U.S. involves a drive who does not have a valid license. It is ESSENTIAL that your insurance coverage extends to uninsured and UNDERinsured motorists.

The AAA Foundation analysis showed that approximately 11 percent of all police reported crashes involve a hit and run driver, and that the problem is especially alarming for pedestrians. “About 60 percent of the people killed in hit and run crashes are pedestrians, ” said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, adding that “1 in 5 pedestrian fatalities involve hit and run drivers.”

From 1994 to 2003, a total of 14,914 people were killed in hit and run crashes in the United States, according to the Foundation's analysis of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System and General Estimates System databases.

"As we age, our reaction time and other cognitive skills can diminish," said Peter Kissinger, President of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. "For instance, our eyesight deteriorates to such an extent that by age 60 we require ten times the amount of light necessary to see an object as when we were 16."

The "Older Driver Involvement in Injury Crashes" report also revealed that drivers over 75 were over two-and-a-half times (2.59) as likely to die in a car crash and drivers over 85 were almost four times (3.72) as likely to die when compared to drivers aged 55 to 64.

“Nearly two-thirds of drinking drivers in fatal crashes are seriously drunk, with a blood alcohol content higher than .15,” explains Peter Kissinger, President of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “In addition, 20 percent of fatal crashes involve at least one driver that did not have a valid license. What this means is that a relatively small percent of drivers is causing a large percent of the problem.”

AAA Foundation research found that courts often do not have accurate tools to identify high-risk drinking drivers. “Many high-risk drivers are alcoholics who drink and drive on a regular basis,” Kissinger says. “Unfortunately, the usual screening tests for alcoholism don’t seem to do a good job of identifying people who will drink and drive repeatedly.”

“We could make the highways much safer if we could get these few dangerous drivers off the roads,” Kissinger says.

Money-Saving Tips

Don’t just keep paying your car insurance invoice when it comes in. For example, many people needlessly carry full coverage on their old car. They originally purchased the vehicle new, paid for full coverage and to this day, continue to pay the same high rate. Once a vehicle gets old it doesn't matter how much coverage you pay for or even how much your vehicle is really worth you will only be paid a specific (lowball) figure if an accident ever happens.  Your annual insurance bill should be an automatic trigger for you to make a few phone calls to see if you can save even more money on your car insurance premiums. 

Here's another tip.. Let your fingers do the walking… Shop around -- and do it at least yearly. Here are a few suggestions to help you get the best deal available on your car insurance policy. 

Auto Insurance agents really have a lot of leeway when it comes to premium quotes. They can price match and they can offer you many discounts IF THEY WANT TO. There are also many decisions you can make about your policy that will save you a bundle. For example, if you change your deductible on your collision from a $50 deductible to a $1000 deductible, you’re in line for a huge premium savings. If you don’t think you could come up with $1000 out of pocket, then change it to a $500 deductible; you’ll still save a sizable amount on your annual premium payment.

You can also get more savings if you change your comprehensive deductible. Let's say your ten year old vehicle may be worth $1000 or less. If you continue to pay $250-$450 every six months (total $500 to $900 dollars a year) too keep full coverage on their old vehicle you are driving yourself into the poor house.

If you have an accident and total your vehicle, the insurance company will only pay you the actual wholesale value of the vehicle. In other words, you'll be very lucky to receive $1000 and it will probably be -- less.

Icy Hazards

I just got hit with our first snow storm of the year.  The snow melted and then it became eight inches of solid, slick ice.  Suddenly it seemed like everyone on earth had forgotten how to drive on ice.  For mile after mile it was one car after the other gone into the ditch, some of them into DEEP ditches, and still there were people pounding on my tail to get by. 

One car passed me in a no passing zone with another car already approaching us that had to hit the brakes to let the idiot by. You never hit the brakes in panic on the ice.   The oncoming car skidded sideways in the road.  The passing car hit the brakes and it skidded sideways right in front of me.

I hit the brake, and you NEVER hit the brake on ice that slick.  Off the road I went, snapping a speed sign right out of the ground as I went.  Before I even got stopped the driver of the approaching car was there to see if I was okay.  He turned around and took me two miles back the way he had come from to fetch help from a gentleman farmer and his helpful tractor. 

The farmer was helping a Jeep get unwrapped from a tree trunk on a very steep bank.  I got to help block traffic to make the operation safe.  Oh, how hard it is to watch for traffic to block and not turn around to watch the real action.  One thing I learned while there was how dangerous it is to try hurrying across any patch of slick ice when you're wearing city slicker shoes.  With the ice THAT slick it was dangerous to even try whistling in the wind.  I learned to shuffle my way across the road and anywhere else I went on foot.

A member of the Perryville Volunteer Fire Department rendered assistance in getting the Jeep and my truck back onto the road.  He and the farmer had been out all day helping people out of the ditches.  "Six people were killed on Arkansas highways yesterday," he told me.  From what I've seen today that toll is going to climb much higher.  Interstate 40 is backed up all the way to Morrilton from Little Rock.  The Highway Department hasn't even touched this part of our highway; they think of it as a secondary road.  And I guess it is, our population total for the whole county just recently went over 10,000."

He gave me some good advice for driving on the ice on a country road.

  1. Stay in the center of the road.  That will give you more maneuvering time if your car goes into a skid.  You can't stay there all the time, because of oncoming traffic but in many cases of extreme bad weather you can most of the time, and it is safer.
  2. If your car begins to skid and you can't remember which way to turn your wheels to break out of the skid, begin jerking your steering wheel back and forth slightly.  (I had the opportunity of trying this procedure more than 30 times in the next five hours, and it works wonders at breaking a skid open).
  3. Look for ruts to stay in.  Why?  It is much harder to skid out of a rut.
  4. Next time you know the weather might change, bring your chains.
  5. Ignore the people pressing close behind you; You have as much right to drive safely on the ice as they do.  Do NOT be tempted to pull off the road just so they can whiz on by.  You might not can get back on the road, and their insane driving behavior may kill a friend of yours on down the road if you let them get past you.
  6. Pray for the people coming your way to be ready and alert if you should skid in front of them.
  7. STAY OFF THE BRAKES!  Try to slow down ahead of time, just using your accelerator.  If you ever do have to use the brakes, be ready for anything.
