Start Building Your Traffic
There are a thousand tips to building traffic, and most of them work. What I want to do here is guide you to the basics of building traffic so that you don't get discouraged by having too little traffic. So, let's start out with our eye on the ball.
Let's start with advertising on search engines so we can back up from there to where we should be starting.
Before you can get a link to your site posted on search engines you need something unique on your web site which people are going to search engines to look for. I suggest you start with FREE and Books. The web runs on free. And books you can call your own are easily accumulated. I have 20 good books you can start off with, for free. If none of these appeal to you, there are thousands more available.
Pick out at least ten books you want to offer. You want to create ONE page on your web site for each title.
Now you want to create one page on your web site that lists all the books you have. My traffic runs 10,000 per week; my book downloads are right at 1,000 per week. That's right; one in ten download a book. Another 1,500 read the books right on line. I give them a choice on some books because many people can not download a book, or don't want to.
NEXT,
at the bottom of each page for a separate book,
put a link to the page revealing that you have
TEN MORE books to offer for free.
You have probably noted that I also put ads for other products and services on each of my book information pages. Since it makes money for me, I won't bother to defend myself. Also note the links to other pages on my web site. These pages ALSO have links to other products and services.
"Why have we done it this way?"
Well, it gives you eleven things to advertise.
Because SPECIFIC titles outsell General availability.
By that I mean, if your listing is for A FREE BOOK ABOUT DAVID CROCKETT will gather a ton more traffic than TEN FREE BOOKS, even though the Ten Titles INCLUDES the book about David Crockett.
Now you are ready to advertise your pages on the search engines. You will get David Crockett advertised, Ben Franklin advertised, Tom Paine advertised, Sense and Sensibility --
"Wait a minute, you won't find a place to ADVERTISE on search engines!"
Sure you will; it's called the DESCRIPTION in meta tag language. KEYWORDS work almost as well as advertising. And TITLE comes in third. Where it might help, I even use a meta tag called AUTHOR occasionally -- like when the author is Mark Twain.
Okay, now you have at least 11 pages ready for uploading to the real world.
At least?
Yes. At least.
To be in this for the long haul you need something UNIQUELY yours. If your love is cookbooks, create a web site revolving around cookbooks you have read. If the love of your life is centered in your garden, create a web site revolving around it.
"You know, this is beginning to sound like a whole lot of work!"
Ain't that awful? Anyone who expects to earn money in any other way is doomed to throwing good money after bad for the rest of their lives, running after get rich quick schemes that take your money away from you, not pay it out.
Please remember too, I'm not the one who promised you something for nothing. That was the guy on the web site you just left. Working the web is just like real life; Unless you put something in, you get nothing out. Indeed, working the web is worse than real life because in real life you can FOOL your boss into thinking you are working, and s/he'll pay you for time really spent at the water cooler.
The web won't do that. The web demands value. The more unique that value is the more you will be paid. Here's the good part -- Done right, once you've got your value made and posted, it keeps on paying.
Think of your web site as a farm or ranch. You pick your crop, you plant, you cultivate, you irrigate, you harvest, you build fences, take care of your fences, and you let people ride your horses.
Now, you've posted your ads to the search engines. Next you go to the free advertising sites and begin posting ads.
Free David Crockett Book, David was a hero long before he met James Bowie at the Alamo. Read the fascinating story of his life FOR FREE.
Link the Crockett ad to your book information page, which links to all your other book information page, and the ALL BOOKS information page.
If I were selling garden seeds, I'd still place ads offering FREE INFORMATION, and fill each request with a different page.
Clean up big lakes and little ponds with amazing plant that eliminates 35 times its weight in contaminants. Free Information.
Raise cash crops from plants you get for free. Free Information.
Sixteen ways to double your tomato production. Free Information.
Heady Secrets of a master Cabbage gardener. Free details.
As I said before, you REALLY MUST give free information when they arrive. The better your free information is (and the easier it is to find) the better chance of you selling garden seeds when prospects arrive. Add a few tasteful ads and you're in business.
