A 1999 study of American high school seniors came to some definitely alarming statistics.  In answer to the questions, "Have you ever --?" these percentages of responses were received.

While the Latter-day Saint parents are alarmed at how high their own youth rate of incidence has climbed for these behaviors, the rest of the parents in the United States can look at some of the things the Saints are doing right for ideas on how to protect their own children.

These are my personal observations
and are not official doctrine from
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

  1. Make sure your children are making friends with other kids who have high moral standards.  It doesn't matter so much what religion or lack of religion those friends have allegiance to; it definitely matters how high their standards are.

  2. Take time to share good spiritual relations with your children.   Read Scriptures together, pray together, go to Church with them, invite your minister or religious leader over to visit with you and your children.

  3. Be a good example of what you want your children to be like.

  4. In your home, show love for and respect to your spouse.

  5. Express your love for your children frequently.

  6. Hold Scripture study games with your family on a weekly basis.   Read books recommended by your minister with your children.  If your Church offers youth programs or magazines for your children, study these with your children.

  7. Help your kids practice for their sports activities or with homework assignments.

  8. Show your support for your children by attending their school functions and Church activities, their games.

  9. Develop family traditions, especially for religious holidays.

  10. Working with your children's input, develop rules and enforce them with set consequences.  Punishing them for something they "should have known," is not a good way to play.

  11.  Rebuke gently, praise often, and forgive generously.

  12.   Watch for changes in the personalities of your children.  If your child usually comes home and tells you all the fun they had, then suddenly stops, chances are something has happened.  Look for subtle changes too, bitterness toward other family members, self-isolation, staying in their room longer than usual, starting a new habit, like chewing gum, avoiding eye contact -- the key word here is change.  When their habits change, their personalities soon will follow suit.

  13.   Last piece of advice, Don't monitor your children's behavior, SHARE their lives.
