"Do you know what you believe?"

To the Editor
our town, USA

Yesterday, On Sunday, In the year of our Lord 2008 some unknown group of people sneaked into the parking lot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during our Sacrament Meeting and pasted anti-Mormon literature on our windshields.  "Do you know what you believe?"

The third grade material they left behind warned us that we were going to hell primarily because the religion we have chosen to live by was founded by charlatans, embellished by fools and has perpetuated a form of spiritual slavery for almost two centuries now.

It is our sincere hope this was slapped on our windshields by a few radicals in town only in a woefully misguided effort to save our souls. We do sincerely appreciate their concern for our spiritual welfare.  Most of the ridiculous charges leveled against our Church in this literature has been proven unfounded, untrue, and unbelievable for at least fifty years or more, but such is the mindset of some people that the bigger the lie is the more eagerness they display in rushing to perpetuate it.

Alexis de Tocqueville, the French historian who wrote the four-volume work entitled Democracy in America has said: "I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there; in her fertile fields and boundless prairies, and it was not there; in her rich mines and her vast world commerce, and it was not there. Not until I went to the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great."

Latter-day Saints affirm that choosing a personal religion to believe in and live by is the most important decision anyone on earth will ever make. In the United States the Bill of Rights guarantees that right to make a personal decision in spiritual matters shall not be abrogated by law or by force.

Latter-day Saints are persuaded that Christianity is the religion that everyone should earnestly investigate first. There are many Christian faiths represented right here in our town, all of which invite your earnest investigation. The Catholic Church will be glad to tell you what the Catholics believe. Baptist Churches can tell you what the Baptists believe. Methodist Churches can tell you what the Methodists believe. And, believe it or not, us Latter-day Saints can tell you what WE believe.

Yes, the tenets of our faith are unique in Christendom, but those Latter-day Saints tenets are also wholesome, warm and spiritually uplifting. The congregation meeting just outside of town on ___ Street proudly invites anyone to come inside our chapel as guests to see and hear with their own eyes and ears what we really believe. We also welcome every invitation and opportunity to come share our real beliefs with individuals, with families, with groups, clubs, organizations and other church congregations, and we will respond to your request for more information as promptly as is humanly possible.

But this sneaking into the private property of any church parking lot in an effort to tear down that religion with lies, false charges, and cheap printing is not an example that good Americans should emulate. Nor is it even good sense; We already KNOW what we really believe.

Sincerely yours
