INTRODUCING |
The whole world is buzzing with the word “VoIP” This esoteric terminology is an acronym that stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Therefore, VoIP is the mechanism that provides the ability to transmit voice over the Internet and find its way to either a receiving computer or to a telephone. One thing that makes it extra valuable is that both the receiving and the sending stations can move from one location to another and still find each other. The telephones we grew up with can't do that. Standard landline telephones use the Circuit Switching Network. The entire landline telephone system is known as the Public Switched Telephone Network while VoIP works by what is referred to as the Packet Switching Network. The main difference between Packet Switching and Circuit Switching, is that Packet Switching uses (data) or Packets. You might think of them as those little bundles that hoboes once carried over their shoulders on the end of a stick. Packet Switching can send these packets all over the Internet. You may not recognize the name but you are familiar with Packet Switching because it is already used to transfer data all across the Internet – For example, it is used for E-mail. Packet Switching converts audio formats into data packets and transmits them over the Internet, then reassembles them on the other person’s phone or computer in real time. By using a High Speed Internet Connection, a microphone, and speakers a conversation can take place that is comparable in quality to any landline telephone conversation. Even when I was using the first ones that came out the quality was great. Now the quality is superb. | New Technology Can Help You Bring Down Compare what you have to pay now with the values we find for your family. Circuit Switching (your old telephone) is still being accomplished by using electrical circuits to make a telephone connection using principles inherited from Alexander Graham Bell. When you think of Circuit Switching think of those old movies where switchboard operators, wearing headsets, are frantically trying to connect the right caller with the receiver they just woke up from a long winter's nap. During the latter part of the 1990’s, programs were springing up across the Internet offering some form of free VoIP technology. Most of those mechanisms are either no longer existent or now charge a standard monthly service fee for the use of their product. VoIP is constantly developing higher standards of quality with new improvements arriving almost every day. VoIP is a viable force for our telecommunication needs for the future. Indeed, companies such as Sprint, Verizon, and AOL are now offering monthly VoIP service plans on the side. Instant Messaging programs have been utilizing the science of VoIP technology for years. Now, most Instant Messaging programs come with “voice” enabled features. These features allow you to call a member off your buddy list. By using a microphone and speakers, you and your buddies will be able to converse anywhere in the world through your Instant Messaging program, powered by VoIP technology. VoIP is prized most for its ability to integrate many forms of telecommunication applications into one package. VoIP can handle computer file data, audio, video, E-Mail, and other web based applications SIMULTANEOUSLY. This capability can provide an incredible efficiency boost to businesses. It also is becoming a cost effective choice of telephone service. |
Instant Messaging is a perfect example of how VoIP incorporates different areas into one program. With your voice enabled Instant Messaging program, you can hook up a digital camera or a web cam and use video, while you are speaking with your buddy on your microphone and listening to them with your speakers, and you can type back and forth with your chat program. Women, who are multi-tasking entities anyway, can also write an email while they are doing all of these other tasks at the same time. The general public isn't ready to use all these things at once. Remember when computers scared the living daylights out of most people while an ever expanding core of users couldn't let it alone? VoIP is already passing through that stage and a larger segment of the public is ready to use the new technology to fill their old need for a telephone. VoIP telephone service providers are rapidly increasing in popularity. Meanwhile, more and more people are discovering a use for ALL of the benefits available to them by switching to VoIP. Fueling this intense drive is the fact VoIP costs significantly less than standard telephone service, and this is a great attraction for bringing in any new technology and finding new customers for it. Many VoIP service plans will now let you make unlimited long distance calls or provide you with a plan for very inexpensive rates. Many of the EXTRA features that are often included for a fee with traditional phone service are often included FOR FREE with basic VoIP services. These include features such as Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Call Block, Three-Way- Calling, Voice Mail, and Yes -- MORE. Another benefit fueling the acceptance of VoIP services is the fact that many providers will let you keep your existing phone number. On top of that, some of them let you select a new area code. That last item has great appeal to many people. For instance, you can select an area code for the same town where most of your friends or family live. By choosing this area code, not only are you still getting a great discount with your VoIP services, but now your family and friends will save money whenever they call you. For them, it will be a local call and won't incur a long distance charge. VoIP has proved that it is a viable force in the field of telecommunications. To a guy whose first personal communication device was a tin can walkie talkie, the potential for VoIP’S use appears to be nearly limitless. VoIP is here to stay. |
